Acrylic paints are great for creative projects – they dry quickly, have vibrant shades, and adhere to almost anything. The problem arises when they end up on your t-shirt or jeans instead of the canvas. The good news is that there are several proven methods for removing acrylic paint from clothing.
How to Remove Fresh Acrylic Paint
- Act quickly: Quick action is key. If the paint is still fresh, blot it immediately with a clean cloth or paper towel. Do not rub – simply press gently to avoid pushing the paint deeper into the fibers.
- Rinse with cold water: Hold the stained area under cold running water from the reverse side of the fabric. This helps push the paint out rather than forcing it further into the material.
- Use soap or laundry detergent: Apply liquid soap or laundry gel to the stain and gently work it into the fabric using a soft brush or an old toothbrush. Leave it to sit for at least 10–15 minutes.
- Machine wash: Then wash the clothing in the washing machine according to the care label instructions. If the stain persists, repeat the process – do not iron or dry the garment until the stain is completely gone, otherwise the paint may set.
How to Remove Dried Acrylic Paint
If the paint has already dried, use rubbing alcohol, acetone (careful with synthetic fabrics), or nail polish remover. Apply a small amount of the chosen product to a clean cloth and gently blot the stain. The paint should start to dissolve. Then wash the garment as usual. If the stain persists, repeat the process.
