Even if you change pillowcases regularly pillows themselves tend to yellow over time – especially due to sweat, body oils, or cosmetic residues.
The good news is that even older pillows can be effectively cleaned and whitened. You just need to know how.
Step 1: Check the care label
Before you start washing carefully read the care label on the pillow. Not all pillows are the same – some may require special care depending on the type of filling or material.
Step 2: Cleaning yellow stains
If your pillow has marked yellow stains, we recommend treating them before washing
- Baking Soda: Make a paste from baking soda and water (in a 3:1 ratio). Apply the paste to the yellow stains and let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour. Baking soda effectively removes odors and grease.
- Vinegar: Mix white vinegar and water in a 1:1 ratio and spray it on the yellow stains. Vinegar is excellent for removing odors and yellowing. Let it sit for 30 minutes.
- Hydrogen Peroxide: Hydrogen peroxide is very effective at removing yellow stains. Mix it with a little water and apply it to the stains.
Step 3: Washing and drying
After treating the stains, you can wash the pillow in the washing machine. Set the temperature according to the instructions on the care label (usually 40–60 °C) and use a laundry detergent suitable for white or light-colored laundry.
If you use a dryer, set it to low or medium heat to prevent the pillow from losing its shape. If you don’t have a dryer, let the pillow dry thoroughly in the air, preferably in the sun.
How often should you wash a pillow?
It is recommended to wash your pillow every 3 to 6 months. Regular washing helps prevent yellowing, the buildup of bacteria and allergens, and also extends the lifespan of your pillow.
